CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT
As soon as she said the word, I stumbled back and turned. Warren was standing in the doorframe, watching Ava and me, his face drained from the usual hint of pink that laid in his cheeks.
âI have to go.â
âWhere?â I managed to force out as I stood in front of Ava protectively.
âIâm going to join the search party for that girl,â he said without a hitch. Running his hands through his hair, he looked at Ava behind me.
âWant to come with?â Warren asked her and my stomach flipped.
âNo, I need her to help me with something tonight,â I interjected before she had a chance to answer. âBesides, I donât want our daughter out there when who knows what happened to a girl the same age as her. Warren, how could you even think to put our daughter in harmâs way?â Now I was angry. I was angry for so many reasons, but ultimately, that I was having to protect my daughter, our daughter, from the very man who was supposed to protect her fiercely.
âNo, youâre right. That was reckless of me. I think Iâm nervous to leave you both here alone.â Warren moved from the door, allowing us to all pour out into the foyer.
âIâll call Max on my drive and see if he could come stay here.â
Warrenâs phone buzzed in his pocket.
He ignored it and kept talking to Ava and me, yet I didnât hear his words. The buzzing of his phone kept going on and on.
Then a text message alert.
Sliding his phone from his dark-washed jeans, his eyes lit up.
It had to be Scarlett.
I watched his lips curve upward as he read the message. The pink in his cheeks quickly returned and suddenly, I wanted to vomit.
He just saw the news of a missing girlâa girl he may have been involved withâand yet, one text from another girl and he was already back to an inflated ego.
âWho is it?â I barked at him.
Clearing his throat, his eyes drifted to Ava.
âWarren!â I shouted.
âA colleague.â He grabbed a flashlight from the console table drawer before sliding his shoes on and turning the knob.
âSure, it is.â I squinted before slamming the door behind him.
I was letting my emotions get the best of me. I had told Scarlett to continue her affair with Warren; I had told her to document it all. Yet, here I was, still in agonizing pain, knowing I was married to a sociopath.
âWhat was that about?â I completely forgot Ava was standing right behind me.
âWhen are you going back to London for your study abroad? I donât want you falling behind.â I was frazzled and my words were frantic.
Ava looked hurt, and I hated that she thought I was trying to get her out of the house.
âI know this was supposed to be your first year without Max and me⦠Sorry I came home.â Ava knocked me in my shoulder before sprinting upstairs.
My heart shattered as I watched her. I didnât even try to call out to her.
